Save our Leisure Centres
Leisure centres and libraries are at risk if taken over by penniless Flintshire Council!
Cash-strapped Flintshire Council is planning to take over Flintshire's leisure centres and libraries on 1st November, replacing the well-regarded and successful charitable company Aura.
Aura has been successfully running Flintshire's leisure centres and libraries since 2017. The company is employee-owned (like John Lewis) and sends any excess profit back to Flintshire Council.
To safeguard investment into Flintshire's leisure centres and libraries, Aura haas carefully built up a reserve of £3.5 million - enough to run for over 6 months.
This year, the Labour-run Flintshire Council has already overspent by a staggering £8 millions. Unless this is balanced by more cuts or more income, it will leave the council with only £180,000 in reserves, only enough to run the council for 5 hours!!
All discussions about Aura have been held in secret with Councillors not being allowed to see the Aura contract, the legal advice or correspondence between Aura and Flintshire council.
WHY?
A special meeting has been called for Oct 24th to discuss Aura's future. Flintshire Liberal Democrats are planning on presenting the petition below.

Call upon Flintshire County Council to: 1. Hold a full public meeting on the future of Aura WITH AURA PRESENT; 2. Immediately halt plans forcing the employee-owned, not-for-profit Aura out of business; and 3. Work with Aura to find a sustainable solution, recognising the strong performance of Aura since its formation in 2017.
